TGLIFE's Photographer Extraordinaire Frederike De Jonge On Goth - German Style
The biggest gothic festival in the world, Wave Gotik Treffen, was held for the 18th time in Leipzig (Germany) attracting its regular attendance of 25,000 visitors...
I
t is definitely recommended to arrive early as the cues for wristbands/tickets are excessively long! Arriving the day before all of the mayhem begins is a really good plan... The festival is quite spread out through Leipzig with a variety of venues (Darkflower, Moritzbastei, Spiegelpalast, etc.) hosting gigs and parties. There was a huge line-up of bands such as Combichrist, My Dying Bride, Lahannya, Frozen Plasma, Clan of Xymox, UK Decay, Grendel, Specimen, Sanity Obscure, Inkubus Sukkubus, VNV Nation, Nosferatu, Dolls of Pain, Feindflug, to name but a mere few.
The level of dressing up and the variety in hairstyles was absolutely amazing. They are massively into their hairstyles. There was a huge presence of fabulously styled mohicans, cyber locks and a wink to the 80s. Every imaginable fashion statement was present; ranging from Cyber, Period, New Romantic, Industrial, Lolita, Punk, Zombie, Vampire, Emo to Trad Goth and beyond. The individual styles and creativity were stupendous. Some designed and made their own outfits to strut on the virtual catwalk by the Agra Halle. I was blown away by the incredible make-up skills which heightened the look to pure art, in particular la Comtesse Léa. A visual feast to the highest degree.
Also, in the Agra Halle as well as the Heidnisches Dorf (Heathen/Pagan Village) you could shop until you drop, updating your wardrobe with the latest in Gothisentials and fabulous must have accessories or add to your CD/Vinyl collection. For all the animal lovers out there, you can now treat your cat or small dog to its very own coffin to sleep in and other merch from http://www.pimpyourpet.de
In the Heidnisches Dorf there was quite a serene and romantic atmosphere with bands performing who were dressed in period clothing, such as: Adivarius, Figg's Academy, Omdulö, Ragnarök, Solblot, Varius Coloribus, playing mainly medieval or traditional folklore type of music which transported you back in time to the court of Henry VIII. There was also a Victorian picnic which wasn't greatly advertised, shame really..., and the Moritzbastei catered to a medieval market.
After you have been to this event you will more than likely make it a permanent fixture on your gothic diary... The dates for next year are: 21st until the 24th of May – definitely book your accommodation as early as possible. An event not to be missed!
